If he’s so innocent then he should welcome a trial before the election. The mass delusion of the GOP is a danger to our democracy. The rest of us must make sure our democracy still exists.

Reflecting on this moment, one is reminded of the famous lines by John Adams, one of the architects of American democracy, who stated, "We are a government of laws, not of men." Today, this phrase rings true with a renewed gravity as the third indictment of Donald J. Trump unfolds before us. This indictment isn't merely a statement of legal process; it is a fundamental assertion of American values and the enduring principle that no one is above the law.

At its heart, democracy is a covenant we make with each other, a sacred pact grounded in the mutual respect for the rule of law and the peaceful transition of power. The indictment represents a reckoning with a historical deviation from this pact. It unveils a tragedy whose scale is still under scrutiny, but what remains evident is the audacious attack on the core tenets of our democratic edifice.

The charges laid out in the indictment are not just legal technicalities. They embody the profound struggle between the facts and a deliberate dismissal of truth. This speaks to the importance of our collective commitment to discerning truth from falsehood and upholding our democratic values, even when faced with lies that are potent enough to sway public opinion.

We must never underestimate the power of untruths to erode the pillars of democracy, as clearly evidenced by the widespread belief among some that the election was fraudulent. To this end, we are reminded that the fight for democracy is continuous and demands the vigilance of us all.

While this indictment marks a significant step towards accountability, it should not be seen as a panacea. The wounds inflicted on our democracy are deep and their healing will require more than just legal action. Much like a traumatized child's journey to healing, it will require consistent nurturing, unyielding efforts to rectify the wrongs, and an unwavering commitment to uphold the truths we hold self-evident.

I echo the sentiment that the path forward will be arduous. Yet, I am hopeful. This indictment serves as a beacon, illuminating the path towards healing and reinforcing our collective commitment to democratic values. May it stir us all into action, inspire us to uphold the ideals of democracy, and guide us towards a more just and accountable political landscape.

So true Gloria, when will the great majority of those silent believers in Democracy start to take whatever action they are capable of to speak or write out about what each of us will lose, should we lose our democracy?

The impact of this third indictment of Donald Trump on the political landscape and upcoming elections will largely depend on several factors, including the legal outcome of the charges, the public's perception of their legitimacy, and the broader political climate at the time. Here's a breakdown of potential impacts:

1. **Solidifying the anti-Trump base:** Given the nature of the charges, it is highly likely that this development will galvanize the anti-Trump base. If the charges are perceived as legitimate and are ultimately upheld in a court of law, this could serve to validate their concerns about Trump's conduct during and after the 2020 election. The indictment may spur these voters into more active political participation, including increased campaigning, fundraising, and voting in the next elections.

2. **Impact on pro-Trump voters:** The reaction among Trump supporters will likely be more varied and complex. Some may see this as further evidence of what they perceive as unfounded persecution or political targeting of Trump, which could strengthen their support and galvanize them into action. Others may start to question their support if the legal proceedings reveal compelling evidence of wrongdoing. However, given Trump's enduring popularity among his base and their demonstrated resilience to negative news about him, a significant shift in support seems unlikely.

3. **Impact on undecided or moderate voters:** This group will likely be the most critical in determining the overall impact of the indictment. If the case is presented clearly and convincingly, and if there's an overall perception that the charges are serious and well-founded, it could sway these voters away from Trump or any candidate he endorses.

4. **Impact on Republican politicians:** Depending on how this plays out, it could deepen the divide within the Republican party between those who align themselves with Trump and those who distance themselves. This could potentially lead to infighting and a weakened party in the next elections.

In conclusion, while the indictment has the potential to influence the political landscape, it's not a guarantee of any particular outcome. The situation is fluid and will be heavily influenced by the specifics of the legal proceedings, the media coverage, the public's perception of the charges, and the broader political climate. However, it's safe to say that this indictment will be a crucial factor in shaping the political narrative in the lead-up to the next elections.

That is an excellent analysis, Gloria. I believe it is crucial for supporters, allies and political donors of Trump, to consider the overwhelming collateral damage he has caused. That will require then to step outside their own mindset and circumstances. The general consensus among people outside the United States is that Trump is unhinged and dangerous. The fact that any American would support him, is beyond all conscious rationale.

As I breathe a sigh...of relief and frustration...my mind says this is great news. However, the scope of the indictment leads me to ask the question," why is HE not behind bars now?" Surely, if it were any other citizen, they would be brought in. 🤔

Trump has lived his life without consequences and I want his consequences to be as big as the crimes laid out in his indictment . People who worship him MUST see him as the criminal he is. His supporters and trump himself continue to threaten our society with.."big stuff like we've never seen". Bully talk. Law enforcement, the military, and we citizens who believe in the rule of law cannot let him spew these threats and take no action.

Arrest and cuff him and bring him in for the arraignment..just like any other citizen would be treated.

Five lawyers have been named as co-conspirators. All are Republican. They all were not named because Smith really wants to focus on just getting a speedy trial for USA vs. Donald J. Trump, the past president who now has 3 indictments, 2 impeachments, and a slew of other charges against him in GA and NYC. Somewhere, sometime, he will be facing iron-clad vertical bars. His excuses have run out. He will appeal everything so he can have more time. But guess what? The appellate courts will tire of his plan and continue to deny him which will throw him right back at Smith, our Superman. I am so here for all of it!

Thank you, Marlene, for the positivity in your statement “The appellate courts will tire of his plan and continue to deny him...” I sure hope they tire, we need Justice to be served. As I go back and forth to all the different social media and see the statements by the “right”, it is so disheartening to read they’re words. Then all the things that they are saying about the “Bidens” so so unfair, they have nothing but lies, no evidence, only conspiracy. So sick of the HATE. (😡). Be well and pray hard. 🇺🇸

You always accurately explain the existing dangers to our Democracy. You have fully awakened me to the precariousness of the moment in our country’s history.

Why do so many of my friends and family who want us to remain a Democracy keep silent? If Trump becomes President again it will probably be too late to stop the march towards our Democracy’s demise. We must all, no matter how small our voice may be, do what we can to derail the MAGA train.

Thanks, Steven for being a voice of reason. As noted in the final paragraph of your piece, the most significant thing, as we hopefully put this bad dream in the rear view mirror, is what we do about uSA. Thoughts, prayers, and name calling won’t cause us to put the Kool Aid down and come to our senses. We need adults to act like adults, and for real leaders to stand up.

Trump has never understood that the power of the presidency is on loan for four years at a time. He thinks it’s a permanent endowment.

Watching Jack Smith speak today did it.

Lack of the ability to discern may be an excuse for the 40% of 45s supporters. The republican party and right wing media have no such excuse. The entire lot should be tarred and feathered.... oops, that is cruel and unusual punishment, can't use that any longer. Can they be locked in a display window with a red light advertising their wares? with prices?

Six attorneys and the entire GOP (except those on J6 Committee) perpetrated Trump’s lie and are also guilty of trying to destroy American democracy. They conspired as a well-oiled Federalist Society machine to overthrow our republic with the help of Fox and other right-wing media. Let’s not forget the wife of SCOTUS Thomas was in the inner circle of conspiracy.

Yes, Didi, you are correct that the enclave of Lawyers around Trump were enablers of his nefarious plot. I often wonder just WHAT they thought would transpire, if somehow Trump had managed to impede the peaceful transfer of power? Did they really believe he could just remain in the White House? Any rational person should have been alarmed that protesters desecrated the Capitol building, battled with Law Enforcement and chanted 'hang Mike Pence' around a gallows. However, many GOP, including Pence himself, seemed benignly accepting. Trump has crafted a world of alternative facts that his supporters seemed to buy into. He claimed he could do anything he wanted, so apparently they believed they could, as well. The people around Trump during his tenure in the White House, well knew of his volatility and inappropriate actions and statements. Were their jobs more important to them than the rule of law and democracy? Apparently so....

For this one, 18 U.S.C. § 241 (Conspiracy Against Rights).. If death results from the acts committed in violation of this section, they can be fined under this title or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death...Quite fitting..

Money will now come pouring into his PAC to be spent paying his substandard lawyers. His followers are either trump flag carrying fools or those who hope for personal gain if he wins, morality & justice gone with the wind.

I think he will be no match with Smith who has proven himself a defender of truth, honesty, democracy & our Constitution, an excellent Garland choice.

Now will come the flurry of nonsense from Gaetz, Greene, McCarthy saying it is all motivated by the political doings of the Biden crime family.Junior will wear his arms out, McConnell will say nothing while Melania will go to NY to have her hair combed.

Don is done !!
