Appreciate this essay. I still cannot get into my All-American head how all those sane Republicans in the House allow this to continue. Surely, they can see the dire threat to our country, to our democracy, to our very way of life as this nonsense and stupidity accelerates. Party affiliation aside, why won't just a small group of these Reps get together, especially those from Biden-won districts, collaborate with the Democrats to oust McCarthy and get this country back to exceptionalism instead of nuttery and incompetence. What the world must think as stupidity takes over in America. For God's sake, put the country FIRST for a change!
With Putin & Company on a rampage and threatening nuclear war, a recession looming, the virus still active and killing, damage across the country from climate change destructiveness, border chaos, China's to be reactions from its problems, education going downhill with book banning and people like DeSantis dictating what can be taught,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,how dare these incompetent Republicans and their power crazed leader take Yogi Berra's wrong, nonsensical fork in the road? Their only aim is revenge. As MLK said: Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. These misguided Republicans know only love of power and are willing to do anything, even burn the Capital, to acquire it.
So called proud Americans vote these people into office. Ha! A woman yesterday told me she never listens to the news. A man said he went into a men's restroom, and at the bottom of a urinal was a
F........Biden sign. He said, imagine and to me, it was the best p.......s he ever took.

Despite the wayward GOP dividers' desire to enact their vengeance agenda, I still cling to the hope that America's political ship will have a course correction. Nefarious intentions serve no good purpose, and internal dissent and disorder will eventually come back around to haunt the Republican players.
Saw a post somewhere about Nixon this morning and it made me wonder how in the hell the USA has managed to elect so many incompetent corrupt dangerous men to positions of power and importance!
they have no shame, no ethics nor care to have them. They don’t care about the American people, only themselves and 45. The US means nothing, their donors, their owners are the only ones who matter; even the MAGA idiots don’t matter - they are used as fodder, literally. They have no platform, they have no ideas - they represent every ism that we don’t need: racism, sexism, antisemtism, terrorism….
This disingenuous bigot, McCarthy, clearly does not have the intellect, leave alone the necessary enlightenment, for the job of being Speaker. Let's be generous, however, in ascribing to him the basic level of intelligence needed for him to know full well that he is setting a course that will cause utter chaos in this country. I guess that's his game.
My question, though, is this: why is Merrick Garland still hesitant to indict the seditious reprobates in Congress who were guilty of conspiring with Trump in planning and staging his attempted coup?
C'mon, Merrick: do you think the reputation of the Department of Justice will somehow remain unsullied while the country burns to the ground around you?
It's like we are back in January 2017, starting all over again with the incompetent MAGA extremists. MTG on Homeland Security and Oversight committees particularly spins my head. So, we don't have 45 as president, but we have his cult members, who have spoken outrageous views, holding power in the House. McCarthy is pathetic, giving power to anyone who would give him a vote for Speaker. We had to know that his begging for votes from the MAGA extremists would end badly for our country; and it has !!! So, what do we do now??? There are some who say this is a gift for Biden and the Dems because it will show just how incompetent these MAGA extremists are, how little they will do for the country, how much harm they will potentially do for the country, because they are so misguided and didn't want to get elected to serve the country, but only wanted to get there to strut their MAGA credentials and launch investigations at anything and anyone to the left of center, whether they have solid evidence or not. We have spoken in this group about the lying. Lying is real. Sadly though it works with the segment of the population who blindly believe anything the MAGA extremists say. I don't agree with those who say this is gift for Biden because it will reveal the incompetence of these MAGA extremists and it will show them to be what they re and it will show that they re not serious bout governing or dealing responsibly with the country's problems and they are not serious about doing the work of the people. These extremists are vocal and their followers are easily whipped into their frenzy. I won't mention the terrible names in history; but we all know who they are. Lie often enough and the people begin to believe it as true. Speak to those who feel a need to be part of a group, albeit a misguided, dangerous group, and those who need N affiliation will follow. I am extremely worried that even without 45, the movement will have considerable power, at least for the short term. And that power will encourage a resurgence of the campaign for president that 45 has launched for 2024. How did we get here??? Wait, that is not the correct question now. The question is : how do we get out of this mess and bring Democracy back to our country. As I write this I am hearing on the news of more classified documents being found at 1 of Biden's homes. Biden and his team, changed strategy last week, focusing on the achievements of his first 2 years as president. However, as the drip drip drip continues, the classified documents debacle keeps gaining more oxygen. I'm sure that none of the MAGA people are seeing the distinction of Biden cooperating and 45 obstructing, claiming at times the documents actually belonged to him, claiming at times he declassified in his mind, claiming that Biden is a criminal and 45 isn't. The facts don't matter to the cult. I think it is time we faced reality. A pundit on with CNN or MSNBC said that the winner of the 2024 presidential election will be the party that decides that they have to go younger (not because of age discrimination but because it is time for a new generation of leadership) and at this point I think they really need to get away from this having classified documents at home mess. Having had some names rolling around in my he'd for a while, and then eliminating some because of information I learned that would be flaws easily exploited by the cult, I am now settling on Josh Shapiro, former attorney general of PA and now Governor of PA. Sadly, it might bring anti-semitism to the forefront (though actually anti-semitism has been rampant in our country anyway for a long time and especially in the news recently). However, we can't let the stop us. Back when I was first getting into following politics as a 10-year-old, people said the Catholic JFK couldn't be elected because we never had a Catholic president before. And JFK did get elected; and he was a good president who brought a new generation of leadership to our country, until that awful day when he was assassinated. It is time to take religious labels out of the equation. It is time to put quality candidates on the ballot. It is time to bring Democracy and honesty and decency and fairness and equality and voting rights and women's rights and the rights of all minorities and marginalized people and healthcare rights back to the forefront. Let's get to work. Our future and the future of our country depends on it !!!
Can Alejandro Mayorkas demand Green not be briefed on national security issues? I know Gym Jordan is about to impeach Mayorkas, but that is, of course, not going to fly. I do sincerely hope that Jeffries will begin to fight back against the absurd appointments and activities promised by McCarthy. Republicans need to be hammered every day.
Steven, we are witnessing the party of performative narcissism, charlatans, grifters and conspiracy lovers spread their opiate to the ill-informed, under-educated, and weak masses while at the same time emptying their pockets of what little they have, and then pointing to others (pick you favorite religious, ethnic, race, color, sexual group) as the scapegoat. All in the name of unchecked power and enrichment. It is really quite simple...and also maddeningly hard to stop because rationality no longer works for people who have been fleeced and are then confronted with that reality...they cannot admit it so they double down.
I fear for what could happen in the next two years. If so much were not at stake, this would make A Confederacy of Dunces look like high drama and this would be the new comical standards
McCarthy's fecklessness in his pursuit of Pelosi's gavel is breathtaking, and his weakness was on full display for all of America to see as he surrendered his power to the corrupt gang of thugs holding him hostage. That he didn't have his election to Speaker sewn up before he called the vote amply illustrates that he's no Nancy Pelosi.
I can’t help but feel (maybe I am too much of an optimist) that we are at a tipping point. Diehard maga-heads may never change their views, but there are many other Republicans that are far more levelheaded. When the more centrist Republicans start to see their bases falling away, they may opt to side with more realistic approaches to governance.
When will American voters wake up and smell the cow patties?. When we hear words that are undemocratic we must speak up and never again, five minutes later, say “I should have said something “.
