You have laid it on the line here, Steven, and I totally agree. On a parallel lane, I am incredulous that this "immunity thing" seems to seethe and survive within the GOP. Here in Pennsylvania, we have a Republican congressman (not mine) named Scott Perry. He is a smug, cocky creature who thinks he is untouchable. He was as involved and culpable in inciting the insurrection as anybody. The DOJ has the goods on him. Yet, nearly 3 years later there remain no consequences. So, I hear about this, "well, congressmen have special protections" crap and I think, 'No - persons in power should be held to higher account, not lower'. When are these "Republican congressmen", as Trump called them, going to have their feet held to the fire? It just irks me to the point of almost insanity!

I don’t think it will happen, but there should be an investigation of the DOJ why in the hell with those congress people not arrested in investigated immediately three years ago?????

James, I agree with you 100%

Good morning Steven. As usual you clearly elucidate the danger that faces us if we don’t convince a majority of the Electoral College in 2024 that maintaining the rule of law, our Democracy, we are all in for dangerous times. Your supporters are already sold on the dangers of a Trump presidency. Now we must all evangelize those not yet thoroughly mesmerized by Trump that inaugurating a “King” will not bear the fruits of his promises, but will bear the evils of a dictatorship.

This trial and his others are the country's best chance to penetrate the fog cast by the complicit right wing media. To hear Trump defenders is to hear people who trust nothing uttered outside of their limited news entertainment.

Agreed, We can only try to influence those still sitting on the fence and get the so called independent news media to call Trump what his words portend, that he wants to be King.

Why wouldn’t Trump think he’s got Kingley powers -that he’s above the law? He’s been a criminal his entire life and until now no one has ever said “no no no Donnie you can’t do that”. When a man is almost 80 years old and no one has said “no” to him, of course he thinks he’s the king!!!

You’re not wrong.

Excellent piece, Steven, and thanks for breaking things down. Chutkin has my deepest admiration of a judge who follows the law and acts accordingly. With respect to a person we all know as being a crook and a rapist, the fact that he files appeals after appeals, is nauseating and frustrating. Something is deadly wrong with our laws. The “king” wants his servants who he illegally appointed to do his bidding. SCOTUS must be aware of, by now, that the public does not hold them in the greatest of regard. Roberts and his crew screwed that up and we know most of the unscrupulous details. If they do not want mutiny and further destruction, they’d better rule against the man who is maniacal.

SOCIOPATHS AND THE HARM THEY DO - Donald Trump reminds us every day of the grave dangers posed by our collective ignorance of how sociopathic people ruin everything for everyone, except for their enablers. And, even these enablers are ruined in the end. Can we not learn to identify these damaged people and deal with them firmly, but compassionately, and not give them power over our lives? In the U.S. Donald Trump is the Big Daddy of them all, but we all know others who are harming individuals, families, communities, governments, and the world. What good is the science of psychology if we don’t learn from it and make the world a better place?

Yay for Judge Chutkan. We are all equal under the law. Just because DJT was 45th president does not mean he gets immunity. He has to abide by the same laws as every other citizen of this wonderful country. Also, those acts from which he wants immunity have nothing to do with his role as president. They were part of his campaigning for retaining the presidency even though he had lost the election. Also, he is not president now. So, even if he had immunity from certain presidential things while he was president, none of it matters now. How many ways can this be said? No immunity for DJT. He is sounding stupid (and for someone who claims he went to Wharton at Univ of PA (Univ of PA is my alma mater, though I was in the women's liberal arts school, though I did take 2 semesters of econ at Wharton because I figured that if I was at the unit that had the best business school in the4 country, I should at least find time to take a course in it). Of course, whether DJT was really in Wharton, or did he just spend some time on campus, or did his dad give a big donation to get him accepted, those r all open questions. However, I am wandering from the primary topic. DJT IS NOT IMMUNE FROM ANYTHING. His stupidity is throwing everything onto the wall and hoping something will stick might be buying him a little time; and he hopes he can win in 2024 and them dismiss all charges against himself (please let's pray that this wanna be dictator doesn't win). Again. DJT IS OT IMMUNE FROM ANYTHING. HE IS A PRIVTE CITIZEN AND HE SHOULD ACT RESPECTFUL OF THIS WONDERFUL COUNTRY AS MOST OTHER CITIZENS DO (well, maybe except for his enablers). Amen. GOD BLESS AMERICA 🇺🇸 And Steve, thanks for this daily opportunity to vent respectfully, with other respectful people.

trump said shortly after being elected that a third term appealed to him. He also implied members of his family could then follow, setting up a dynasty. He presently says he wouldn't do that, but he lies.

A revenge chart has already been prepared. Besides nepotism, only those loyal to him would be appointed, regardless of their fitness for the positions. trump spouting he will save America would almost be laughable if it weren't so frightening.

( JFK certainly employed nepotism, but fortunately, they followed the law. )

He did, but his brother was as smart as JFK, in different ways, unlike the pseudo senior advisor roles that Jared and Ivanka invented for themselves. And then they had the audacity to churn out some $640M in personal profits whilst carrying out their”official” duties.

Another terrific piece. Thank you. I’m so thankful to Judge Chutkan for laying it out so thoroughly. Why haven’t we heard more about the 14th Amendment and the issue of holding office? Are the numbers in Congress bad or are there too many legal questions about parts of the amendment.

… “cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.” Washington

Now THAT’S Wisdom!

Reading such prose reminds me of just how beautiful the English language can be. How rare, for me, to come across such verse from leadership that now shames our current Congress.

Beautifully said. Let’s work to make sure he’s not elected but rather goes to prison.

Oh god, another delay. I hope the Appeals Court will rule quickly on this issue and hope that the Justices of SCOTUS will rule with the Republic in mind.

DJT is a celebration of malignant mediocrity. If America is going to be dictatorship, why can't we have a smart one like Vlad?
