Thank you for this discerning essay, Steven. Unfortunately, it is my lot to abide in a congressional district where any republican incumbent is so secure that an A-bomb could not remove them. And so, of course, my(?) congressman voted to cede the authority of the people's house, our voice, to the criminal stench of trumpism. This is the same guy who voted against a bipartisan, bicameral investigatory panel and then later bitched that we now have a partisan committee bent on conducting yet another "witchhunt", despite the fact that it is actually bipartisan. I really do not know what we can do about people like this. There is something to be said about integrity. "If you do not have integrity, you do not care that you do not have integrity". How do you fix that?

The Republicans who voted no care not a whit about the country or democracy. They care only about themselves. Never before have so many members of Congress voted against learning the truth about a dire threat to the nation. Argue as they might, each one is now on the record as supporting the violent overthrow of the government. If you don't want it investigated, you support those who beat police officers and tried to stop the peaceful transfer of power. Ironically, these Republicans are, in essence, supporting the people who in all the chaos and confusion might have killed them.

Everything you state is true. Just explain to me why Merrick Garland is such a "behind the curtains" kind of guy. None of us know where we stand with him. We can't even tell if he will do the right thing for the country. Last night President Biden in his Town Hall says he doesn't even speak to him. He also said he will not interfere with the Justice Dept. as he told us while he was campaigning. That was good, but these sneering reprobates should not be allowed to disrespect our laws and constitution. Where is the guy on the white horse or the man in the cape to save us against these petty people? I'm waiting, but not hopeful. Please, Merrick Garland, prove us wrong.

I think 2 things are going on here.

1. Going back to when trump wanted to run for president the very first time. He hemmed and hawed abt which party to run in. Going back, I remember him saying years ago that the dems weren’t easy persuadable. He then studied the republicans and knew, especially when the Freedom Caucus sprung up, they would be the perfect tool to use. Remember Trump was a dem all his life except for when he switched to Libertarian for a few years. When he decided to run in 2015, he knew the Republican Party was starting to fall apart and thought they would be easier to take over. Hence the MAGA control.

2. The Republicans aren’t necessarily cowards, they are using all these visuals for one purpose, to gain power and control. While everyone is fixated on all the chaos MTG and her cronies are causing, republicans are quietly moving in on the kill to ramp up bogus voting districts, bogus new laws based on THE BIG LIE and tormenting Biden with refusal to even discuss his agenda. Their main goal is to tell America how bad the dems govern, even tho they have not voted on one single thing. It’s all head games with the Republican Party. They are using fear for power plays, they are using lies for new laws and in my opinion, the dems are not strong enough to stop them bc they are the party of doing the right thing and p,aging by the rules.

I have been willing to give Merrick Garland time. He will not telegraph his moves; he doesn’t want to get up there and spew like the last administration. But…I want to see movement on all of these things. We suffered corruption and downright cruelty from the last administration and have been traumatized…
