Dear Stephen — I’m not sure I know about the serious family illness you referred to in this post, but I’m sending good thoughts your way. I hope we can connect soon. Xo

You’ve made a very important point. Compassion is a necessary trait for a president to have. Absence of compassion inevitably leads to cruelty and that’s exactly what we witnessed from the previous president. Hundreds of thousands of Americans wouldn’t have died from Covid if the former guy had had any compassion.

In fact the entire republican party currently lacks even a shred of compassion as far as I can tell. It’s so pervasive that I believe the GOP made a deliberate decision years ago to only back republican candidates who displayed a willingness to set aside whatever degree of compassion they may have had in exchange for a career in Congress and some extra cash above & beyond their govt. salaries.

I’ve worked in hospitals as an RN and later litigated medical malpractice lawsuits as an attorney. Whenever a physician asked me what they could do to avoid getting sued, I told them it was very simple. Display some compassion for your patients. It was my experience that patients who had physicians that expressed caring and concern for their patient’s well-being, their patients didn’t sue them, even if that physician made serious mistakes.

There seems to be a myth these days that it’s only “weak” people who are kind & caring. I actually believe the opposite. It takes a particular kind of courage to allow yourself to be vulnerable enough to care about your fellow humans as well as express it to them.
