I can't help but wonder how different our lives and country could have been if the Manhattan DA had done their job decades ago. It's not like the former guy just started this 6 years ago. His crimes go back decades, and the way the system is set up, guys like him, get away with everything. That system has proven to be incredibly damaging to our country. If they had done their job, he would already have been in prison, instead of the WH. He's also not the only rich white guy that's done this and those guys are warming up in the bullpen to take his place. Will we ever learn, or are we doomed to keep repeating this bullshit over and over? Time will tell. In the meantime, I'm still looking for another country to live in, just in case.
In a just world, Trump would have been laughed out of town as an aberration. But the fact that he has gained such traction, speaks to the fact that ours is a deeply bigoted country and one that is mired in religious fundamentalism.
The answer lies in social welfare and education. But it will take at least a generation - alas! - to effect true change.
Part of the problem is the media. When Trump & Melania rode down the escalator and he announced his candidacy for President, he gave a speech that was, how can I say this, out of touch with reality. Every thing he said was either questionable or simply not true. What I didn’t realize at the time was that his speech was the opening salvo of his disinformation campaign for his fake presidency. But what did the media do with that speech? I expected them to ridicule it mercilessly, but that didn’t happen. It was generally treated as an announcement of his campaign like any other announcement of a campaign.
Trump wasn’t elected, he was fake-elected. If it weren’t for Putin he wouldn’t have had a chance and that’s been documented now, four years too late. So, ok, that happened. What do we do now?
1. Take him out of the running for the next presidential campaign. D.A.Tish James & D.A. Cyrus Vance are taking care of that. 2. Pay attention to non-mainstream media.
There’s a lot of information available that pertains to republican collusion with Russia that has been well researched by serious journalists, but it’s generally published in internet news & politics “magazines” like Mother Jones, Slate, Daily Beast, DC Reports, Raw Story, etc.
3. Push back on disinformation you see on social media. The way I see it we all have a responsibility to counter false information. I’m only on Twitter and I often see disinfo there. My usual routine is to quickly look it up on the internet using only established sources that are trustworthy, copy it & drop it into a tweet countering the disinfo. Always give credit to your source.
By the way, I’m seeing more & more fake “articles” published by entities I’ve never heard of. If you don’t want to have to deal with any blowback from Trump supporters or disinfo operatives, open an account with a nom de plume.
4. Insist on honesty from your elected representatives. If you have a republican
senator or representative saying things that aren’t true or that more or less deliberately gives the wrong impression, it’s easy to send them a quick email. Just type their name in your search app followed by “contact.” (Senator Mark Kelly contact) and you can type in a brief message. Always be polite. My husband gets upset and writes accusations peppered with expletives. It might make him feel better but he won’t be taken seriously.
One more thing. Don’t get sucked into a back & forth exchange with someone who’s trying to convince you of something. The people doing that are trying to recruit you.
The fundamental battle for democracy in America is up to those of us who want equality and fairness. Seems as if that would be fairly simple, but alas, it is not. The Big Lie is a cancer with long range destruction.
